Description

The Encyclopedia of Milwaukee is an extensive research project chronicling the history of Milwaukee and the surrounding area. This project covers a variety of topics from the famous Socialist mayor Frank Zeidler to the Town of Grafton and the Gettelman Brewing Company. The Encyclopedia publishes entries digitally on a rolling basis upon their completion and will later collect all of the articles into a print book. The digital version will include maps, photographs, digitized primary sources, and stories about the research process in addition to the articles. Our job as undergraduate researchers is fact-checking. We first receive an entry that has been marked up to direct us to what needs to be checked. We usually are asked to confirm basic but vital facts such as names and dates, but we may also be asked to confirm broader concepts and ideas. As fact-checkers, we seek and interpret sources to confirm this information. To do this, we use scholarly secondary and, when needed, primary sources. We find many of these sources in the UW-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library Archives, Microtext Collection, and Special Collections, but we occasionally venture to other locations or search online databases to find what we need. The Encyclopedia of Milwaukee aims to preserve Milwaukee's deep and rich history while also making it easily accessible to everyone. Content is already available on our website, https://emke.uwm.edu/.
