Yellow Perch has been an important source of food and cultural significance across the Great Lakes for hundreds of years. However, with the onset of invasive species such as Alewives, climate change shifting temperatures, and trash polluting the waters, Yellow Perch populations have been declining the past few decades. As such, the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences has been conducting research with Yellow Perch for over 20 years, covering everything from aquaculture systems to the nutritional needs of the fish. In tandem, this research can be utilized to benefit commercial industries such as aquaponic farming systems, conservation efforts, and growing Yellow Perch at a large scale for stronger food security. Striving to increase the communication and public knowledge of the Yellow Perch situation, this video will cover all of this and more. By discussing with the researchers and workers directly working with Yellow Perch, get a behind the scenes look at the research being done to help conservation efforts of Yellow Perch in Wisconsin today.
