Abstract
In the November 2006 general election, Wisconsin voters passed a resolution to amend the state constitution to make it unconstitutional for the state to recognize or perform same-sex marriages and civil unions. Shall Not Be Recognized: Portraits of Same-Sex Couples exhibit, documented the experiences of thirty same-sex couples in long-term, committed relationships in the area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin during that time. The traveling exhibit was a collaboration between author Will Fellows and photographer Jeff Pearcy. This text corpus is derived from the oral histories that were part of the exhibition.
The oral histories and photographs are online here: https://uwm.edu/lib-collections/shall-not-be-recognized/.

Comments
This corpus was created as part of a project to develop workflows and best practices to use machine learning tools to extract text from archival AV materials, with a focus on the LGBTQ+ collections that are part of the UWM Archives. In addition to creating the corpus, the project also developed a prototype dashboard to demonstrate the teaching and research potential of the corpus using text analysis and engaging new modes of discovery.
Creation of this corpus was funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of the second cohort for Collections as Data: Part to Whole.
