Description
The recent changes to the healthcare landscape in the United States are putting more cost pressure on the providers of healthcare. Children's Hospital of Southeast Wisconsin (CHW) is one healthcare provider that is feeling the cost pressure. This project focused on the "back room activities" of receiving, storing, handling and distributing all the medical supplies throughout the multiple departments and stock rooms in the hospital. / / The primary objective was to identify process improvements that will increase productivity and reduce cost of replenishing medical supplies. The start of the project involved on-site data collection following a precise methodology and leveraging the knowledge and experience of hospital workers. Through this data collection, process flow charts were created and explain each process that an item will go through from receiving to getting the item to the end customer. / / After studying each process flow, areas of improvement were compiled and a select few were picked for actual process improvement research. By taking real data from the hospital, research was implemented to see if there would be any cost savings by implemented these different scenarios. /
