Description
By the year 2020, 70% of the dams in the United States will be at least 50 years old and will be in need of repair. In addition, the World Energy Council estimates that there are 198,151 GWh per year of unused power available in low head locations, making now a great time to develop more efficient hydro turbines as we are becoming more reliant on alternative energy sources. In order to develop more efficient hydro turbines, our research team investigates the performance of different Kaplan hydro turbine geometries at different head levels and operating speeds using raw data collection, finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics analysis. A summary of up to date results from this study will be presented along with future plans for this project.
