Description
Antibody purification via protein binding has been extensively used within the biotechnology industry. Protein L is a protein commonly used in the purification of antibodies. It binds to the variable light-chain of an antibody, thus having a wider range of antibodies it can bind when compared to other proteins. Here we demonstrate how protein L(8) can be cross-linked and polymerized into a hydrogel and how this hydrogel can bind, retain and release IgG antibodies in a highly controlled manner. By altering the concentration of protein L we can affect the binding capacity. This property of protein hydrogels may provide a new potential method for the purification of antibodies.
