Description
The LGBT+ History Film Project is a collaboration between doc|UWM and the Milwaukee Pride organization in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Through filmed interviews, archival photos and other visual techniques we aim to show how the community has changed over time in the Milwaukee area. Our interview subjects include drag queens, writers, bar owners and other community members who have contributed to the history and culture of this city.
One subject we’ve been focusing on, BJ Daniels, has been performing at drag shows in and around Milwaukee since the 1970s. BJ has been a great resource of knowledge for us and through BJ we’ve been able to learn more about how the scene has evolved through the past few decades as well as what people were going through during the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s and onward.
Our goal with this video is to mix archival photos from Milwaukee’s past with interviews and other visuals from the present. We hope to spread empathy and inform the viewer on how the community has survived and evolved through the years.
