Description

The NAF Future Ready Scholar Program was a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) and the College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) at UW-Milwaukee. The program featured two cohorts: a one-week engineering group and a four-week architecture group. In partnership with the Milwaukee Public School District, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), All Hands Boatworks, and Journey House, the program hosted 28 students from 9 different Milwaukee high schools. Four teaching assistants, 2 from UWM and 2 from MATC, worked alongside the high school students –learning and teaching simultaneously. Of these 28 students, 11 students enrolled in the architecture track and 17 enrolled in the engineering track. These cohorts worked closely with UWM faculty and partners on a curriculum featuring STEM-based learning experiences. The students were exposed to hands-on project-based learning, diverse careers, and team-building skills. The program concluded with the on-site construction and installation of the two shade structures that provide shade, seating, reusable energy, and water collection to the Metcalf Park community. The project and program advances the goals of M3, a partnership between the MPS, UWM, and MATC to transform the future of the city of Milwaukee through education. This research project consisted of designing and curating an exhibition to exhibit photographs from this summer camp in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Throughout the research I curated images, and drafted text in order to form a storyline to showcase the summer camp.
